Wait ! Before you type the name of the system you have in the comments I want you to think. Listen to what I have to say. I have a PS3 that works just fine. I also have two kids age 8 and 5. The PS3 spends most of its time streaming Netflix and Amazon content. DVD and BlueRays get played as well. Occasionally I get to play Gran Turisomo, Portal or Force Unleashed. My son plays Minecraft on it for time to time and both kids play the Lego games. I want to be able to hook into my home media server and I might be thinking on chord cutting. Usage basically breaks down to 70% streaming media, 20% games and 10% local media. So based on all that any opinions on the best unit for our situation?

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! did a side by side in the summer and basically shrugged their shoulders. Also, I know PS3 won’t stream live YouTube content (think Le Mans) Do either of the new systems do that?

I have a PS4 because it’s what I’m used to and all my friends are there. Streams Netflix and all those things, not sure on YouTube stuff.

I went from a ps3 to xbone. I’m not sure about the streaming, but the TV tuner and cable integration is pretty sweet. I got it moat for forza, but I’ve spent more time playing the gold games so far.

I was in the same boat, pretty much exactly the same usage. I just kept the PS3 and bought a Lenovo ideacentre 300 for $100. Way cheaper and I put Kodi(xbmc) & Netflix on it and got rid of cable forever.

I find it boils down to the types of games you enjoy the most. I personally enjoy the Xbox fare the best! Plus, subjectively, I find the Interface on the PS4 to be kind of weird.

Edit: Also, I don’t know how people with large hands use the PS4 controllers for extended periods. They’re so tiny.

Your situation sounds identical to mine, almost down to the number and age of children. The only reason I could think to suggest PS4 over XBone is that you will be able to play all of your current games on the new system. I’m still trying to get my head around the modern streaming options, but I wonder if it would make more sense to sit on the PS3 and go with some sort of streaming widget like Chromecast or Apple TV.

(I did read your post, but I’m still gonna put the questions down below just ‘cause it’s easier.)

Do you care about Halo, Forza or Tomb Raider?

Do you ever play online, and if so, do the people you play with already have an Xbox One?

If you answered ‘No’ to both of those questions, buy a PS4. It’s by far the better choice for anyone who isn’t tied to the Xbox online ecosystem, or a fan of Microsoft’s exclusives. Take it from someone who has both.

EDIT: No idea about live YouTube streaming on either, I’m afraid.

(Personally, I play everything that isn’t an exclusive, or the kind of multiplayer game that I want to play with my console-owning friends, on my PC, but going by how you’ve described your situation, that probably wouldn’t work for you.)

I have a PS3, I bought a Nexus 7 tablet to stream live things to chromecast to put it on the screen. It has worked so far so good. From Cardnials games to the live YouTube. I did have to install a different browser for flash streams.

If you want media functionality then the Xbox One is by far and away the best choice. If you just want a box to play games then (ignoring exclusives) then the PS4 is what you want. If you are okay with chatting to your TV then think about getting a Kinect too, mine is my primary way with interfacing with my TV and media stuff.

It honestly sounds like you should get an Apple TV and maybe get a current-generation console a little later on. I made the switch from PS3 to XbOne but honestly most of my Netflix/HBO/YouTube/etc. steaming as well as my Spotify AirPlay is done through my Apple TV, or I hook up my computer to my TV through the HDMI port when I’m at school.

I'm not tied into any specific titles. I've played a bit of Halo, but with younger kids in the house I don't get much time to play FPS. I don't play online. Used to back in the day, but kids sucked up that time. I don't mind the kids playing games, but I haven't let them loose on the wilds of online gaming yet. Thanks for the notes.

I just had this same debate. I did a bunch of research and came to the conclusion that both systems are great and do mostly the same things. It came down to which game exclusives are better and I liked what the Xbox had to offer better. Also, with the Xbox you can use an external hard drive to increase storage.

No problem! Keep in mind that I’m coming at this from the perspective of someone who uses his consoles pretty much entirely for games and game-related stuff. My PC’s my main media device - it’s hooked up to both a monitor and my TV - so while I’m aware of the consoles’ media functionality, I have relatively little first-hand experience.

For all I know, the Xbox One media experience might be significantly better than the PS4’s, though I suspect my primary complaint with the system - that the interface is slow, illogically laid-out and irritating to use by comparison with the PS4’s - would still be valid.

I’ve got super small hands - like, small for a girl, and I’m a dude - and I can still use both pretty comfortably. I probably prefer the XB1 controller overall, but that’s mainly down to how easy it is to use with my PC.

Xbox has better media integration features. You can set it up to be the center of your entertainment hub and have the kinect control your TV, cable box, and receiver. When you flip the xbox on it’ll turn the rest on automatically. If you like you can have it auto start to TV. It’s pretty damned neat.

I’ve got nothing bad to say about either console and I have both. If you’re going to use it mostly for video I’d just go with the Xbox though (PS4 is fine though).

I was able to stream the 24 hours of Daytona just fine on my PS4 off the IMSA site, it’s web browser seems to work pretty well for things like that.

I’m probably the wrong person to ask about which is better since I’ve been a PlayStation guy since the PS1 days. I will admit that the menu on the PlayStation store (especially the search function) could be streamed lined. Personally I would just have you look at the exclusives and decide off of that. Also wait until you can get a bundled system, that way you can get a free game with it.

I’ve got an older Apple TV, and it’s good as long as you’re primarily an Apple dude. If, like me, you occupy a range of ecosystems - Android phone, iOS tablet, Windows PC and Mac laptop - you might be better off with a Chromecast. They’re a lot cheaper, too.

(Just as a disclaimer, I have a pretty hefty anti-Apple bias - yeah, even with the MacBook and iPad - which could be tainting my opinion somewhat in this regard.)

I would just save the money and get neither. The PS3 handles all of those tasks fine as-is, and none of the really hard-hitting exclusive games of the PS4 (aka, Bloodborne) are really in line with the types of games you’d play with kids. There’s a few ones coming out next year that might be interesting (Street Fighter V, for example) but there’s no rush to buy it now when post-christmas deals are going to be vastly superior.

Put that money toward a Roku or Chromecast and some premium streaming accounts.

What keywords did you use to navigate to the program? Just MST3K?

Fun fact, I saw the first episode when it was live to air. I lived in Minneapolis at the time. A couple of years later, during summer break, a friend and I visited the studio. Super cool. Sadly they weren’t shooting. A PA showed us around. Saw the bots, the reserve of gumball machines, and the satellite set.

The biggest challenge is how you intend to use it. We have an XBOne in the living room that is used almost exclusively for streaming media since my wife hates games. We have an XB360 in the office that sees more use as a gaming platform since the door can be closed and the gamers can have at it without disturbing the wife. I’m seriously considering swapping the two so the kids and I can play more recent games. We may net even have to do that since o moved the chromecast from the third tv to the living room. I can’t remember why I did that, but it has been handy. Since it can handle most streaming media tasks (except Amazon), we may just pull all gaming consoles out and leave it at that.

TL;DR: keep the old system for media streaming and pick the new system for the games you want to play.
